Wichita Firefighters IAFF Local 135
Protecting & Serving Since 1872

  • Wichita firefighters take on the great responsibility of protecting the largest city in Kansas, working to ensure the safety of Wichitans and their property every day. They respond not only to home and business structure fires, but to many other emergencies as well, including brush fires, car fires, medical emergencies, personal injuries and vehicle accidents. In many emergency situations, firefighters are the first responders on the scene.

Increasingly, Wichita's firefighters' ability to protect our safety and property is being compromised due to a lack of funding. Based on the current recommended levels suggested by the International City and County Managers Association, the Wichita Fire Department is significantly short in staffing because of underfunding. This shortfall is resulting in serious public safety concerns.

Use the resources within this section to learn more about the importance of a well-equipped and adequately-staffed fire department. Check the response time maps to determine how long it would take firefighters to reach your home in case of an emergency, read about a day in the life of a firefighter and more.

After exploring the challenges that Wichita firefighters face on a daily basis, you may be confused at the lack of dedication our city seems to have given to those who protect us. As a city-funded entity, the Wichita Fire Department is supported and sustained using the tax dollars of Wichitans. While our taxes help fund hundreds of important city resources, our leaders need to prioritize and realize that life-saving entities such as our fire department need to be valued and well equipped, for their safety, and their communities.
